有一只狗总是在人们不注意的时候咬伤路过的人。主人就在他的脖子上系了一只小铃铛,这样小狗接近的时候人们就可以有所防备。挂了铃铛的小狗得意洋洋,以为这是一种无上的殊荣,四处炫耀。一只上了年纪的猎狗过来对他说:“你为什么要这样招摇呢?主人给你挂上铃铛并不是表彰你的美德,只是要让大家看清你的邪恶本性而已。”
不以为耻,反以为荣。

两只狗

一个人养了两只狗,一条训练成猎狗,一条教会他看家。每当猎狗和主人带回猎物时,主人总要施舍一块肉给看家狗,作为奖赏。久而久之,猎狗的心理开始不平衡了,埋怨看家狗整天无所事事,只知道坐享其成,而他每天干活到筋疲力尽。看家狗不服气地说道:“你应该责备的不是我,而是让我养成不劳而获习惯的主人。”
与其责备犯错的孩子,不如去谴责让孩子养成坏习惯的父母。

有个铜匠养了一只小狗,非常宠爱他,把他看作自己始终如一的伴侣。每次他忙着准备食物的时候,小狗在睡大觉。当他开饭的时候,小狗正好醒来,摇晃着尾巴向主人索要食物。一天,主人假装生气地对索要食物的小狗说:“你这个讨厌的懒家伙!我在忙里忙外准备做饭的时候,你就舒服地呼呼大睡。当我准备用餐了,你就开始摇着尾巴要吃的了。难道你不明白‘劳动是幸福的源泉’的道理吗?不劳而获是不可能的!”
温饱和繁殖是所有动物的天性。

农夫与狗

农夫遭遇了暴风雪,被困在牧场的小茅屋里,没办法出去找食物。在开始的一段时间里,他先用自己饲养的绵羊和山羊来充饥。可是,暴风雪似乎没有停止的迹象,于是耕牛也成了他的食物。看到这种情况,看门狗意识到他们的命运,于是就在一起商量对策:“我想现在是我们逃离这个地方的时候了。主人既然连和他一起工作的耕牛都不肯放过,更不用说我们了!”
那些不善待亲人的人是不值得我们信任的。

年迈的猎犬

一条猎犬在年富力强的时候从来没有向森林里的任何野兽屈服。可是,如今的他已经大不如前了。这不,他本来已经咬住一头野猪,可是日渐松动的牙齿已经不能成为他的得力帮手,结果野猪逃脱了。怒气冲冲的猎人非常严厉地责怪猎犬。猎犬委屈地看着主人说:“主人啊,这并不是我的错啊!我是真的想为你捕捉猎物,可是我力不从心了。我宁愿用我过去的行为得到您的赞赏,也不愿因为现在的自己而被您责骂。”
这则寓言说的是力不从心的悲哀。

一条母狗就要生小狗了,她急忙找到牧人,恳求他帮她找一处生产的地方。农夫答应了她的要求。不久之后,母狗又请求牧人给她一处养育小狗的地方,牧人同样答应了。然而,当小狗长得身强体壮后,母狗竟然说这块地方是她自己的地盘,不允许牧人靠近。
有些人是贪心不足的。

几只饥饿的狗看见河面中心漂浮着一张牛皮,就想拿来充饥。可是牛皮距离河岸太远,他们想尽了办法也够不着。经过商量后,他们决定喝干河里的水,这样就可以得到那张牛皮了。结果,牛皮还没有拿到手,他们的肚皮就被河水胀破了。
不要尝试办不到的事情。

冬天,狗蜷缩在一个极为狭窄的地方冻得瑟瑟发抖,他暗下决心等天气暖和的时候一定要给自己建造一所房子。可是,等到夏天来临的时候,他却整日在舒舒服服地睡大觉、伸懒腰。这时候,他就想既然已经有了这么舒服的地方睡觉,那么就根本没有必要去费力修建房子了。
人很容易产生惰性,把今天的事情拖到明天去做。

一群狼对一群牧羊犬说:“既然我们有这么多共同点,那为什么不能像兄弟一样亲密相处呢?我们之间只有一个区别。那就是我们生活得自由自在,而你们却要低三下四地为人类服务。人类又是拿什么回报你们的呢?是无穷无尽的鞭打还有限制自由的铁项圈。他们要求你们保护羊群,可是他们在享受美味的羊肉,却把不要的骨头丢给你们吃。如果你们听从我们的劝告,把羊献给我们,我们就一起享用这份美味大餐。”狗经受不住狼的**,就接受了狼的劝告。可是等狼进入了羊圈之后,首先倒霉的就是牧羊犬。

一只狗很喜欢吃鸡蛋。一天,他看到一个牡蛎,误以为是鸡蛋,就一口吞了下去。一会儿之后,他就感到胃里疼痛难忍。说道:“我真是自作自受啊。我不加分辨地把一切圆的东西都看做是鸡蛋。”
如果事前没有充分考虑,可能会陷入难以意料的危险。

富翁为招待朋友准备了丰盛的酒席。这时候,他的狗也像朋友发出了邀请:“我的主人今天准备了酒席,到时候肯定会剩下很多食物,晚上和我一起来享用吧!”到了约定的时间,狗的朋友来了,看到那么一大桌的美味佳肴,顿时欣喜若狂,说道:“我真是太高兴了!我从来没有这样的机会。我一定要饱餐一顿,明天也不会挨饿了。”
来做客的狗一边为自己庆祝,一边摇着尾巴向朋友表示感谢。就在这时,厨师走过来看到一只陌生的狗,就毫不留情地一把抓住他的尾巴,从窗口扔了出去。那狗被重重地摔到了地上,惨叫了几声。他的叫声把街道上其他的狗吸引了过来,纷纷问道:“今天的晚餐一定别有风味吧?”那狗回答说:“我喝了太多的美酒,有些醉了。现在我已经不记得自己是如何从里面出来的了。”
天下没有白吃的午餐。

Whilehewascongratulatinghimselfandwagginghistailtoconveyhispleasuretohisfriend,theCooksawhimmovingaboutamonghisdishesand,seizinghimbyhisforeandhindpaws,bundledhimwithoutceremonyoutofthewindow.Hefellwithforceuponthegroundandlimpedaway,howlingdreadfully.Hisyellingsoonattractedotherstreetdogs,whocameuptohimandinquiredhowhehadenjoyedhissupper.Hereplied,“Why,totellyouthetruth,IdranksomuchwinethatIremembernothing.IdonotknowhowIgotoutofthehouse.”

小偷和看家狗

有一个小偷夜晚偷偷潜入了一户人家。他随身携带了几块肉片,想要让看家狗保持安静,以免吵醒了他的主人。当小偷把肉块扔向看家狗时,狗对他说:“如果你这样做是为了让我保持安静,那么你就大错特错了。你的这种突然的恩赐只能让我更加警惕。你必定是出于私心才对我伸出橄榄枝,而你的行为一定会伤害到我的主人。”
要对自己的主人忠实。

狮子在海边漫步,看到了在海里遨游的海豚,便提议结成联盟。狮子说:“咱们两个,一个是百兽之王,一个是海洋动物霸主,没有谁比你与我结成好朋友更合适的。”海豚欣然同意。不久之后的一天,狮子和野牛发生了争斗,难解难分。狮子大声呼喊,请求海豚出手相助。海豚虽然极力想钻出海面去帮忙,可是始终未能成功。孤军奋战的狮子埋怨海豚背信弃义。海豚对狮子说:“亲爱的朋友,我真的是爱莫能助啊!你责骂的对象不应是我,而是这大自然,都怪它让我成为海洋动物,无法到陆地上生存啊。”
心有余而力不足。

猴子和海豚

有一个航海家出海去远航,随身带了一只猴子,为的是在漫长的旅途中解闷、消遣。可是,船刚离开希腊,就遇到了狂风暴雨。船被打翻,船上所有的人纷纷跳海泅水逃生,猴子也随着众人跳入海中。海豚看到了猴子,误以为他是个人,就游到他身边,让猴子骑到自己背上,把他送往岸边。当他们就要到达雅典的一个海港时,海豚问猴子,他是不是雅典人,猴子回答说:“是的,我们家还是名门望族呢!”海豚又问他,知不知道比雷埃乌斯(雅典东南部一个著名的港口城市),猴子以为海豚说的是一个人,就回答说:“我当然知道他了,我们是最亲密的朋友。”这时,海豚发现猴子在撒谎,十分气愤,就潜入了水中,结果猴子被淹死了。
吹牛、说谎、伪装都会有损于一个人的生命和尊严。

螃蟹离开海边,到附近的岸上选择了一块草地作为自己的新家。饥肠辘辘的狐狸恰好路过,看到后就一把抓住了螃蟹,想用他来充饥。螃蟹意识到自己命不久矣,哀伤地说:“这真是我应有的报应啊!我为什么要违背大自然的规律,离开海边到不适合我的陆地上生活呢?”
知足者常乐。

一个渔夫完全靠打渔为生。一次,渔夫劳动了一整天只捕到一条小鱼。气喘吁吁的小鱼,恳求渔夫能够放过他:“哦,亲爱的先生,你看我现在多小啊,您就饶了我吧。等我长到足够大的时候,我一定会好好回报您的,到时您再把我捉住,然后饱餐一顿。”渔夫回答他:“我确实是一个头脑简单的人,但是在得到更大的、不确定的利益之前,我也是不会放过任何眼前唾手可得的利益的。”
一鸟在手胜过双鸟在林。

酷热难耐的夏天,狮子正在自己的洞里睡大觉。一只不识趣的老鼠偏偏这时爬到他脸上,把他惊醒了。暴跳如雷的狮子,发狂地在洞里四处寻找这只可恶的老鼠。狐狸看见后就嘲讽狮子:“这么英勇的狮子竟然害怕起老鼠来了!”狮子回答说:“我害怕的并不是老鼠,而是恨他的放肆和无礼!”
一个人的小小的自由,有时候也是对别人的冒犯。
